The Moon
I believe that Ishmael is striving to be like the moon. His grandmother told him that everyone is happy when the moon is out. No complaining about the heat or anything. He's striving to be like the moon by not complaining about his horrendous past and by moving on with his new life in New York city. Ishmael reflects on his life back in Sierra Leone and how it was as painful as it can get for a child solider fighting a war, and seeing the horrific dead bodies everywhere. In chapter 2 he talks about how thankful he is that he is still alive and living in the United States starting his new life. Even though the night brings back his dream world where his memories of being back in Sierra Leone, he still knows that the experiences he went through there made him who he is today.
